The San Francisco 49ers have had an interesting yet fantastic offseason. Just when we thought there was no way the 49ers could have four head coaches over the last four years, they go out and sign offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan from the Atlanta Falcons, shortly after signing on a new GM in former safety John Lynch. Generally, rookie GM’s find it challenging in all aspects during their first campaign at the helm, but this year’s draft has proved otherwise. Coming off of their worst season in NFL history where they went 2-14, the 49ers earned the #2 pick in this year’s NFL draft. Held over the last 3 days, following is the list of final picks:

1 (3). Solomon Thomas, DL, Stanford
1 (31). Reuben Foster, LB, Alabama
3 (2). Ahkello Witherspoon, CB, Colorado
3 (40). C.J. Adrian Colbert, CB, Miami

What is most interesting is the wheeling and dealing that occurred right out of the gate. After the Cleveland Browns selected Myles Garrett at #1, the Chicago Bears traded their #3 pick for the Niners’ #2 pick, as well as for pick 67 in Round 3 and pick 111 in Round 4. On top of that, the Niners received a 2018 third-round pick. Interestingly, the Browns selected Mitch Trubisky, quarterback from North Carolina, leaving Solomon Thomas, DT from Stanford, as the #3 pick for the Niners! Solomon Thomas was who they wanted to begin with, so the Niners started off the draft with a bang and a steal!

Shortly thereafter, the Niners traded their 34th pick (Round 2) and their 111th pick that they just acquired, to Seattle, in order to draft arguably the best LB in the draft in Alabama’s Reuben Foster. When the smoke had cleared, the Niners had just drafted two of the top 3 players on their board. Remarkable!

Can’t wait for the season to start – go Niners!

Chip Kelly was recently hired as the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers. As a long time Niner fan, I have seen several coaches have successful runs in SF, including Bill Walsh (the genius) and his 3 Super Bowl wins, George Seifert (he won 2), Steve Mariucci and Jim Harbaugh (both won lots of games but no Super Bowl wins). Chip Kelly had success at Oregon, winning a national title, as well as rebounding the Philadelphia Eagles from a losing season to the playoffs. Can he turn around the Niners? The odds are stacked against him, but hopefully his fast paced offense will bring some excitement to Niner fans after a poor offense in the most recent season under Jim Tomsula.

I’ve compiled a list of quotes from one of the greatest coaches of all time – Vince Lombardi. His vision and leadership led teams to championships that coaches today often envy. Take a look at these while you grab your morning coffee. Carpe diem!

Words of Wisdom from Vince Lombardi:

1) “People who work together will win, whether it be against complex football defenses, or the problems of modern society.”

2) “Individual commitment to a group effort – that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.”

3) “Winning is not a sometime thing, it is an all the time thing. You don’t do things right once in a while…you do them right all the time.”

4) “Unless a man believes in himself and makes a total commitment to his career and puts everything he has into it – his mind, his body, his heart – what’s life worth to him?”

5) “Once a man has made a commitment to a way of life, he puts the greatest strength in the world behind him. It’s something we call heart power. Once a man has made this commitment, nothing will stop him short of success.”

I look to athletes as role models, not only for myself, but for kids around the world. I like to look at athletes work ethic and embody that in my everyday work. They wake up at 5 Am for workouts, have practice, then watch film on the work they just put in. I respect that! Here are a few sport related quotes that you can implement into your personal philosophy.

Well said, Erin!

“Michael knows best”

The path of least resistance isn’t always the best. Sometimes you have to stick it out, fail, get up, and try again to become successful. Athletes have figured that out. Keep grinding and good things will come.

There has been a lot of Buzz around athletes this week (and not in a good way). They just can’t seem to do the little things right. I mean how hard is it to not physically harm another human being? I may be biased, but as a father, I feel like a line is crossed is when children need to be rushed to the hospital.

I’m an avid sports fan and have been for many years. I routinely follow the Lakers and my main man Kobe. I get my popcorn and “huddle” the family around our tv in the living room all day on Sundays. So, I’m not writing from an executive opinion but from a fan standpoint myself.

As fans, we want one thing. For our teams to win. Everything else in an athletes life that distracts the team from accomplishing this goal is a franchise problem. Businesses in in Baltimore have been PAYING fans to turn in their Ray Rice jersey. That’s right PAYING fans.

It’s time for change and to refocus on what we love – the purity of sports. No more distractions. Let’s just play ball.
